Identity School of Acting

My resolutions for 2023 was that this year would be a year of personal growth.

Coming out of the COVID-19 lockdowns, I realised that if I wanted to excel in my chosen craft of acting, I would need to get back to training. We had all spent 2 years benched and I was feeling pretty rusty. So training of some kind seemed to be the best course of action to dust away the cobwebs and get the creative juices flowing once again. To that effect, I joined the Identity School of Acting.

Just to touch on them a little bit, IDSA are a vocational performing arts school, providing 2 days of training a week. Their raison d’être is to provide training opportunities to performers from underrepresented groups; to help increase the diversity within the performing arts landscape. With the offer of relatively affordable and accessible online training evenings and a pretty well-rounded curriculum, I felt that the training was exactly the thing I was looking for. As a bonus, the IDSA alumni appeared to be quite a successful bunch; clearly the school was doing something right.

I’m currently just past the middle of the first term and I have to report that I’m enjoying the routine. It has provided me with a bi-weekly event, challenging me to focus on my acting. As I’m on the online course, the people have been from all over the world, which as an internationally minded individual, has felt really comforting. I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to stay on the course but I’m sure whatever time I commit to the school will be highly beneficial to me.

Also! To attest to the benefits of hard work and sticking with it, I’m also happy to announce that I booked a gig with my agents Damn Good Voices! I’ve been working on some voice over for a project which will likely be released in 2024. So quite a while to go yet before we will see the project but exciting nonetheless. I love video games, so I’m excited to say that I get to be a part of the creative gaming process.

One of the sayings that Mentors at IDSA like to say is “The Work is the Work!”, and I’m glad to say that some of the work I’m doing is bearing some fruit.

For now, I’m going to aim to continue my journey with Identity School of Acting for the remainder of the year but will continue to seek more acting work in the meantime.

I’m hoping to take on further training as well with a return to regular Kendo, completion of my BADC Standard certification and maybe some further movement/voice training on the cards.
